BSU Holds Workshop for New PhD Grant Beneficiaries

BSU gave out six PhD study grants at the end of 2021 as we continue to build teaching and research capacity at Gulu University. The new beneficiaries were on January 20, 2022,

brought together for a workshop to

discuss their individual research projects and benefit from the input of two professors from our partner universities in Denmark as well as the input of their colleagues.

The beneficiaries, who include George Opio and Jimmy Rombe Alule (both from the Faculty of Education and Humanities), Grace Yumah Nalubowa (Senior Counselor), Dorine Akumu (Gulu University Kitgum campus), Hellen Mshilla Mghoi (Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies) and Patrick Okot (Faculty of Science) were joined by two prospective PhD students, Judith Awacorach (Faculty of Business and Development Studies) and Robert Ringhtho (Faculty of Agriculture and Environment) and each was given 30 minutes to present his or her research project or idea.

Professor Susan Whyte from the University of Copenhagen noted while opening the workshop: “The idea of the workshop is to discuss practically how you are going to do your projects. This is based on something we do in Denmark.”

She said the workshop was about being down to earth and hands-on as the students embark on their research. “What are you going to do and how are you going to do it?” She said.

Each presentation was followed with questions and comments from Prof. Whyte, her colleague Lotte Meiuert from Aarhus University, as well the students. The critical questions and comments helped the students review and get clearer focus of the research projects they are handling.

The workshop facilitators, Prof Whyte and Prof. Meiuert, advised the new PhD students to form a unit in order to keep supporting each other.

“PhD is a long process and you will need the support of colleagues. We will ask you what kind of cohort you want to be and how you want to support each other,” Prof. Whyte said.
